Let yourself be enchanted by the Christmas atmosphere of the Bavarian capital and the Marienplatz square with its tree and its decorations scattered around the city. Here is all you need to know to visit the Christmas markets in Munich in 2019!

Christmas markets in Marienplatz: from November 27th 2019 to December 24th 2019
from Monday to Saturday: from 10.00 am to 9.00 pm
Sunday: from 10.00 am to 8.00 pm
December 24th: from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm

How to get there from Italy

By car: Passing the border with Germany you will not have to pay anything as the motorway is free. Instead, the vignette is due in Switzerland and Austria. My advice is to visit Munich from Trentino Alto Adige. Take some time to visit all the markets you’ll meet on the street; Trento, Bolzano, (you also stop at Vipiteno ), Innsbruck and finally Munich. The vignette Switzerland costs about 35 euros and is valid from 1 December 2019 to 31 January 2021 (14 months). This means that if you pass before December 1st, I don’t know exactly if it suits you. You can instead pass by Austria and pay for the Europa Bridgedel Brennero (near Innsbruck) which rises 190 meters above the valley and is the highest bridge in Europe (at a cost of about 9 euros each way). In addition to this the sticker at the cost of another 10 euros (valid for ten days, and you will not have to attach it to the machine).

By train: You can try with Flixbus or with the train that will take you from your city to Munich with Deutsche Bahn and Trenitalia.

In flight: well, there are flights of 40-100 euros if taken in advance with departure from Milan.

It will not be difficult to reach the markets as it is Google itself that reports the route directly on its map. In case you were lost here is where you can find the markets of Christmas in Monaco of Bavaria . My advice is to carve out at least a night or two to visit the whole city. If you then have 3 or 4 days available you can also visit the Neuschwanstein Castle.

We stayed at the Hotel Obermaier (which I will talk about later in the article) and from there it came easy to take the transport (the bus stop is near the hotel) to reach the center comfortably without losing your head to find parking. The metro system is a bit complicated because you will have to buy the correct ticket depending on the area where you are. You should be in zone 1 and the ticket costs around € 2.80. For convenience I recommend the CityTourCard for public transport and discounts at the price of € 12 thanks to which you can freely use the public transport of Monaco and benefit from discounts, free admissions, souvenirs and gifts from selected partners (counting that a return trip is 6 euros here is the immediate advantage of the card).

If you wish to have a guide with you then take a look at this free tour that will take you through the streets of the city of Munich.

I never dwell on the history of the cities because I believe that a good Lonely Planet guide in Monaco knows a lot more about it than me, but I would like to say a few words about the next photo.

I suggest you take some time to visit it or maybe have a dinner (here also with the ticket to the Olympaturm ) as this activity will make you experience an authentic Bavarian experience in the emblematic Hofbräuhaus , one of the oldest breweries in the world with a lot of history behind it. Here in 1920 one of the first meetings was held which sanctioned Hitler’s political success, while on 25 April 1944 the British air force bombed Monaco and the building was almost completely destroyed. Open from 9 to 24.

Finally, here we are at the Christmas markets, or rather one of the most important Christmas markets in all of Germany.

What to eat at the Munich markets?

You can find the stand of the very good Spätzle (those that are green and made from water, flour and eggs) while here we find them yellow and covered with butter, cheese and fried onion. Sure, a little heavy but believe me I would come back just to eat them again! They are served at markets within a crispy wafer like the one you use with ice cream.

Inevitable are the sausage and white Bavarian sandwiches , also accompanied by sauerkraut or Bretlze , also with cheese. Finally, so much mulled wine with the beautiful characteristic cups.

Give yourself a well-deserved break. After a day spent in the cold you will need to find your safe place. I also really enjoyed staying in this residential and very quiet area of Munich, with a cleanliness and perfection that make it really enjoyable.

We were guests of the Hotel Obermaier, characterized by a welcoming and renovated environment. At the reception there is also a bar and all around is a triumph of elegance, without neglecting the warmest part. The room was a Superior Room with a very large bed and a modern and functional bathroom. I like to sleep in a cool environment but what made me very happy was to find a characteristic part of the breakfast room.

Here, in fact, you can breathe a more traditional and warm atmosphere, made of authentic flavors like sweets that are served for breakfast . There are different rooms and you can choose the one you prefer and then head to the buffet closest to you to taste the typical sausages and ham (awarded several times by the DLG).

Activities in Monaco and its surroundings

There are so many things to do that a weekend is not enough. Among the things I prefer and that I suggest there are the tours among the breweries that you can buy online so that you have the reservation and the security to make the tour.

I recommend this or guided tour of about three hours that takes you to the discovery of the oldest breweries in the city, taking advantage to enjoy a couple of beers (prices from 30 € per person) or take advantage of this free tour through the streets of Monaco or take advantage for 12 euros the hop-on hop-off bus .

Finally, if you decide to stay for a few days you cannot miss Neuschwanstein Castle by train.
