Before organizing my personal trip to Budapest not having too much time to inform me, I read something here and there. Bizarre, you say, since I have a travel route website, but unfortunately I do not always have time for one of my biggest passions and I often prefer to rely on what inspires me from the photos I see on Instagram during my trip. If I had better organized my trip I’m sure that in 3 days I would be able to see all that I know now I would like to see but a bit ‘due to the bad weather a little’ lack of organization I saw say 70% of what I wanted to see .
This itinerary in Budapest that I’m going to describe is therefore the result of what I saw / would like to see and information about the places to visit that I have collected.
It is not always necessary to follow to the letter the itineraries described in the blog because depending on the weather it is necessary to change one or more stages.
So ask yourself first of all what time it will take to concentrate the museums on the “rain” day.
This is my base map but there is a hidden layer called “Attractions” that you can show / hide to see even more points of interest.
How to get to Budapest
Start immediately to clarify that I will be as fussy as possible on places / prices / ways as I had trouble getting information on certain things and I would have much desired a stupid guide to have before my departure!
How much does the flight cost?
To get to Budapest by plane the cheapest amount goes from 20 to 60 euros per person a / r. Booking with about 2 months in advance I paid 60 euros a flight for the second week of December.
You can check rates with this Skyscanner comparator
Once you have booked your flight it will take approximately 1.15h hours from Milan to the Budapest-Ferihegy Airport.
How to get from the Budapest airport to the city center?
The most comfortable way for me was definitely the bus. They are bus-shuttles that depart on time at a distance of about 10-15 minutes from the airport and stop at 4 stations in the city center. If you are lucky enough to have the hotel in those areas is the most convenient solution but also take other bus is not difficult because the arrival frequency is really good.
If you take a look at the map you will also find the 4 stops that the 100E bus makes (the gray stars). The last stop is the airport.

The 100E bus line starts at 00:00 and ends at 23:40 and costs around 3 euros .
List of stops on the 100E bus line
Liszt Ferenc Airport 2 • Kálvin Tér M • Astoria M • Deák Ferenc Tér M
Alternatively, for roughly the same price you can take the 200E bus which stops at the first metro stop (you can always find it on the map with the gray starlet (Kőbánya-Kispest) and from there you can get off at the desired stop by changing several lines.
IF YOU TAKE THE 100E: You have to take the 900huf ticket, the one with the symbol of the plane.
IF YOU TAKE THE 200E: The single ticket is fine.
The tickets you buy them at the machines and just left the airport. If you take a look at my photos I photographed the machine that provides the service. You can not be wrong because they are totems placed outside the airport and with lots of people in the queue.
The means work divinely, so do not be afraid to take them. Alternatively there are taxis or shuttle service (equal to the cost of the taxi or almost) offered by the young ladies who will stop at the airport to offer you the service at a price of 10 euros each.
Budapest Card
Even better if you have bought the Budapest card: all vehicles are free with the exception of the 100E bus.
In addition to this you will be entitled to a boat trip on the Danube, a Molnár’s kürtöskalács, a typical free dessert, a choice of two of the many museums available, a 20% discount at the spa and 30% in many other restaurants. This and much more at the price (for 24h) of 22 euros each.
Making two accounts it is easy to understand how important it is!
You can buy it on the official website budapestinfo.hu
You can receive it at home or pick up at the offices: Budapest, Duna Zrínyi 5, 1051 Hungary

Where to sleep in Budapest
A completely cheap destination so much that you can find accommodation for 25 euros a night each. The Ibis Style is a good accommodation, clean and cheap and in a good good location with tram 2 that runs along the Danube a few steps. The most spectacular solution, however, I had the 3 night accommodation at Parliament Penthouse Boutique B & b , a house with 6 beautiful apartments with private bathroom and a wonderful terrace (depending on the selected room).
Getting around in Budapest is very convenient thanks to the means always on time but surely having a Hotel in the central part (near the Danube) of Pest helps to a better itinerary.
Choose instead to sleep in Buda if you want to try all the spas of the place but beware: in the weekend they are hellish!

What to see in Budapest
Now that everything is ready, let’s organize your 3-day itinerary . Few, many? The right to visit the city even if with a week available you could visit more museums and spas definitely. If your 3-day itinerary is “broken” or you have the flight in the middle of the day and you leave early the next morning, this means that the days available for your tour will be 2 full. In this case the weather is quite small but supposing as in my case your arrival on Friday evening here is an itinerary to visit, in particular, Budapest in winter during the Christmas period.
Below is the itinerary that Google recorded thanks to the GPS of my mobile phone to give you an idea of my movements during the first day.
Of course it is not precise because I did not walk on the Danube.

If you visit Budapest in the Christmas period do not miss the markets: just write Christmas Market to bring up the marker on the map. In particular you can find them:

If you have purchased the Budapest card, you will be entitled to visit two museums . Personally I visited the Hungarian National Museum after the excellent reviews I read but I was not satisfied.
The parliament
Definitely worth a visit but to visit it you have to go on the site at least a few days before to find your Italian tour at the time you want. I booked the same day and found a tour at noon in Spanish or Hungarian. (You can only pay with the cards) So I advise against going to the place the same day to hope for a visit of Parliament from there to a few minutes. Attention: once the time has been established, you will not be able to change the time and ticket anymore !!
Price: around 6 euros

Other noteworthy visits and with the possibility of being purchased online in advance are:
Underground cave tours : from 38 euros
Parliament and Danube river cruise with drinks : from 29 euros
Budapest Chocolate Museum: tour and tasting: from 24 euros
HOW TO MOVE ON THE BUS
Warning : No food and drinks on the buses, they are very tax. The ticket can also be purchased on the bus. Remember to book your stop as if there is no person to wait at the bus stop the bus will not stop.
THE NATIONAL HUNGARIAN GALLERY AND THE BASES OF THE FISHERMEN
To visit in Buda (on the left side of the Danube) there is the Hungarian National Gallery and the Historical Museum of Budapest that deserve a visit just to admire the immense palace and the view from the top of Pest. To reach the top of the hill there is a cable car (not included in the Budapest car) or a series of mini shuttles that leave the other side of the road and are included in the map. Alternatively, if you do not want to walk up you can take the bus number 16 that will take you on!
One of the most beautiful views that I have not had time to see (count that after 4 pm in the winter however the sun goes away anyway) are definitely the Fishermen’s Bastions that you find in the other hill adjacent to the one previously described.

Another structure to visit is The Central Market which is the largest and the oldest covered market in Budapest. The idea of building a large covered market was the first mayor of Budapest, Karl Kamermayer, of whom it was the largest investment.
Find this and other photos in the separate album.
The baths of Budapest
On the map I reported the various spas available in the city that I strongly discourage to visit during the weekend. I had the opportunity to try the ” Rudas ” Ottoman baths and I found the new part very disappointing, dirty and not at all relaxing. So pay attention when you go to buy your ticket because it is divided into 3 sections: Spa, Pool and Wellness or the 16 euro ticket that includes all three. To avoid only the spa (the new part) and rather prefer the wellness part that is the old one. If you take a look at the photos here you can see the display with photos and prices.
Should you go naked at the spa in Budapest? No, although they say that the locals go naked at the spa on the weekend no one inside the spa Rudas was naked. They even entered the saunas with slippers and lacked the main rules.
Is there a man-woman division? Only during the week.

What and where to eat in Budapest
I was amazed but: I ate very well! Accomplice also the low price of dishes (about 1/3 less than us in my opinion) I took the opportunity to visit and taste good food in the best luxury restaurants in the city. It is not difficult to come across good restaurants: I have marked some on the map but just take a look at the menu and if it is not a typical Hungarian restaurant then you are safe 🤣
The typical Hungarian restaurants are not bad in the sense that the dishes are plentiful and you can dine with 10 euros from appetizers to desserts, but spending 2 euros more you can take a full plate (it will satisfy you) in one of the best restaurants.
Below you can see two of my favorite dishes on this holiday (in two different restaurants such as Fricska Gastropub and Vakvarju )
If you can not do without Italian pasta there is always Vapiano …

Attention to the gulash : spicy and the paprika really makes you feel! I preferred a Mushroom soup.

and here is the typical dinner with Hungarian tourist menu …

Do not miss the New York Café
A beautiful hotel with the possibility of lunch, dinner or snack.

Is Budapest dangerous?
No, but clearly the same applies to all the places in the world. In particular, I had a bit of fear in the level crossings of the city due to the presence of not completely recommendable people. For the rest, I walked quietly through the streets of the city.
That’s all?
No, stay up to date with the blog or do a search to find more insights about Budapest 🙂
